Whitby Abbey

A Visit to Whitby Abbey

Climb the famous 199 steps, from the Old Town, straight up the stunning Whitby Abbey. There is also a lovely cliff top walk from the Abbey if you still have energy left after the steps!

Don’t forget to stop at one of the quaint little tea rooms on your way back!

The Magpie Cafe in Whitby

Fish & Chips at the Magpie Cafe

No visit to Whitby is complete without fish & chips. Pictured here is our favourite fish and chip restaurant – The Magpie Cafe. Simply divine!

If you don’t fancy venturing out for your fish, there is a take away right at the bottom of the steps that lead up to our cottage, which is excellent.

Whitby Beach

A stroll on the beach

The beach is just a 10 minute walk from Cairns Cottage and right outside the front door of Cairns Vista. If you catch the tide right you can walk along there to Sandsend where there is a cafe and a lovely pub to recharge your batteries.

Children will love the crab fishing in Whitby harbour … the best spot being right at the bottom of the alleyway leading to our cottage! Bait is available from any of the fishing shops in town, and there are nets, lines and buckets at the cottage for your use.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is right on the doorstep with steam trains going to/from Whitby. You can explore the beautiful areas of Goathland and Grosmont (superb walking) either by steam train or a 20-25 minute drive.

We usually park in Goathland, near the Mallyon Spout Hotel, and do the lovely walk from there to Grosmont, then catch the steam train back, taking in a pub/tea room en route!

The Cinder Track in Whitby

Walk along the Cinder Track

The Cinder Track follows the route of the old railway from Whitby to Scarbrough, which closed in 1965.

At just over 21 miles in length, the track takes in some stunning coastal scenery. With a number of pubs and cafes along the 6 mile section from Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay, this is certainly one of our favourite walks.
