6 things to do with the with the kids in Whitby

Renowned for it’s beaches, Whitby has loads more to offer families with kids – with two of our own, we’ve tried most of them! Here are some of our favourites:

1 – The beach. Come rain or shine, we love a walk on the beach (though the kids prefer it when the sun’s shining of course). We’ve spent many Summer days sunbathing, building sand castles and paddling in the sea at here – it’s one of the main reasons we chose Whitby when we were looking for holiday homes to buy!

2 – Bark Endeavour. This is a firm Cairns family favourite (even for the dog, who sails for free)! Sailing from Fish Quay near the West Pier, Bark Endeavour is a wonderful, authentic 40% scale replica of Captain James Cook’s HMS Endeavour. The trip takes you along Captain Cook’s route on a journey around Whitby and up the coast to Sandsend. As well as the entertaining and informative tales and sea shanties, the kids love the excitement of a possible seal, dolphin or whale sighting!

Address: Fish Quay, Near West Pier, Whitby, North Yorkshire, YO21 3PX.

3 – Pannett Park. Another fantastic, free, outdoor destination, Pannett Park is great for leisurely walks around the gardens and floral displays, and there is a fantastic play area for kids of all ages. It’s also home to the Whitby Museum.

Address:St Hildas Terrace, Whitby, North Yorkshire, YO21 1RE.

4 – Mini Monsterz. For younger children, this indoor play centre is the perfect choice if the whether’s not great. It’s huge, and there are loads of frames and slides, plus a toddler zone and bigger equipment to keep older kids happy too.

Address: The Carrs, Ruswarp, Whitby, North Yorkshire, YO21 1RL.

5 – The Dracula Experience. For older kids (13+) and big kids, this place is not for the faint-hearted! Take a tour through the world of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and explore it’s connection with Whitby. The live actors, interactive animated displays and special effects make for a thrilling experience.

Address: 9 Marine Parade, Whitby, North Yorkshire, YO21 3PR.

6 – Doodlepots Ceramic Cafe. Another of our rainy day favourites when the kids were younger is Doodlepots. With a huge range of ceramics to paint, all the materials you’ll need and friendly, expert guidance from the staff, crafty kids will love Doodlepots.

Address: 5B Skinner Street, Whitby, North Yorkshire, YO21 3AH.
