Where to get the best Fish & Chips in Whitby

Everyone’s heard of the Magpie Cafe – it’s arguably one of the best Fish & Chip shops in the UK. Whitby is full of top-class chippy’s though, here are some of the best:

1 – Topping the list on Tripadvisor is Silver Street Fisheries, just off St. Hilda’s Terrace, a couple of minutes walk from the bridge. With a whopping 78% “Excellent” reviews, customers rave about the quality, value and the service. The batter is particularly good and the fish is served without the skin.

2 – The Harbour View Cafe, just up Baxtergate, is a favourite of locals and tourists alike. Though it often gets busy, the quality of the food is excellent, the portion sizes are huge and they are dog-friendly.

3 – One of our personal favourites is the Fisherman’s Wife, located just under the whale bone arch. This place has fantastic sea views and a varied menu, so the kids can have their fish & chips whilst the grown-ups can have something a bit different – the scampi and the oysters with chorizo are great.

4 – Royal Fisheries is tucked away on Baxtergate, making it a great alternative to avoid the queues. The Yorkshire Cod Specials are a favourite, and the quirky, crinkle-cut chips are delicious.

5 – Overlooking the harbour on Esk Valley Walk, Russels Fish and Chip Takeaway is just a couple of minutes walk from Cairns Cottage, it’s excellent value and our top choice for a takeaway lunch. The food is always fresh, portion sizes are good and it’s in the perfect location to sit out and enjoy whitby harbour.

6 – If you’re looking for a family and dog-friendly pub that does great fish and chips, try The Pier Inn on Pier road. The food is great, there’s a good selection of cask ales and kids & pets are welcome. Again being only a few minutes from Cairns Cottage, this is our rainy-day favourite!
